In south Florida, our seasons do not seem to cooperate and follow the calendar. In fact, if you have moved to the Sarasota area from another part of the country, it can be a bit difficult to adjust to the subtle changes that the locals call “seasons”. What you may consider “spring” in South Florida generally consists of April and perhaps a few days in May. So when looking for landscaping ideas for this time of year, it is likely best to move right into what will thrive in summer. Keeping that in mind, here are some flowers you may wish to consider when landscaping borders, walkways, or beds in your yard.

- Salvia – Also very hardy, salvia will contribute a lot of color to your summer border or containers. Blue, red, or white flowers grow on stately stalks that are easy to cut for fresh bouquets. They also attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
- Purslane – Hot, dry conditions are no problem for this vigorous, low-growing annual flower with pretty succulent foliage and bright yellow, orange, or white-colored blooms.
- Butterfly Bush is drought tolerant, beautiful, and fragrant. The long flower spikes of colorful blooms appear all summer long and can grow from 18 inches to 6 feet.
- Zinnias require almost no care and will produce crop after crop of beautiful flowers. Zinnia comes in a wide range of variety, from upright types (perfect for cut flowers) to more compact, multi-flowered border plants. They grow in every color except blue.Whether growing flowers indoor or out, living in South Florida does present some challenges.
